"Is This Thing Working?"
Title:  "Is This Thing Working?"
Description:  The dispatcher's line said this was an "oiler" and it is oiling the main line between Aurora and Savanna. EPA would go balistic! The mid-train diesel is CB&Q SD9 329, see: http://railfan44.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=581337

Title:  CB&Q SD9 #329 With a Work Train Called the Oiler

For Box Car Fans
Title:  For Box Car Fans
Description:  Looking like a mixed train because of the 40 ft. combine on the rear this day instead of a way car (CB&Q jargon for caboose), this is the Oregon Turn with NW2 9234 doing the pulling. It near Rochelle, IL on September 5, 1964 while making its round trip between Oregon, IL and the Eola, IL yards on the line to the Twin Cities. All the corn stalks in the field have been cut.

The Night Leverman/Operator at Montgomery Tower
Title:  The Night Leverman/Operator at Montgomery Tower
Description:  A self portrait. The box at the right with the crank is a generator, which rings the phones on the line it is plugged into (see the four plug holes in front of the towerman). The greenish papers hanging diagonally are train orders (aka filmsie). The box partially visible box in the upper right corner is the sounder for the telegraph (not used that night). The lit light of the four lights at the right indicates a westbound train is approaching on the westbound track.

CB&Q 165ABC in 1964
Title:  CB&Q 165ABC in 1964
Description:  Early F units usually came in set of 4, i.e., ABBA. The CB&Q found that for most trains on its mostly flat railroad ABA sets were sufficient so the ABBAs were broken into ABs with another newer A added. On the CB&Q an ABBA set was lettered ABCD and an ABA set was lettered ABC. In this picture we see CB&Q 165A, an F7A and 165B and C, F3Bs. The train is the early morning "Pick Up" at Milledgeville, IL (122 miles from Chicago on the Twin Cities Line). If the train had a number, it was never used on the dispatcher's line. Yes it is a heck of a train to be doing local switching, but it did weekdays.

:-) Smile
Title:  :-) Smile
Description:  Duplicate slide purchased years ago. FW&D E5AB diesel numbers an educated guess. Date unknown. Best guess on trains is Texas Zephyr, Twin Star Rocket, and Texas Chief though it seems be a totally posed or fabricated picture. The sky looks fake, no buildings. The AT&SF E8A looks too big, maybe. Who has the original and description?

CB&Q 9947B Became BN 9953 and Then Amtrak 346
Title:  CB&Q 9947B Became BN 9953 and Then Amtrak 346
Description:  Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy E8A 9947B leads an inbound rush-hour commuter run on a frosty morning at suburban Westmont, Illinois on January 4, 1965. This was during the transition between conventional cars (the first several cars on this train) and gallery cars (aka, double deckers). One gallery car is second from last on this train followed by a single deck car which has a generator for the gallery car because the gallery car cannot accept steam from the steam generator in the diesel (eventually all CB&Q E-units in commuter service would be converted to head-end power by BN and pull trains of all gallery cars with no generator car). The gallery car has electric heating, is air conditioned, and had no small generator under it's floor for the lights powered by the rotation of the car's wheels. Conventional cars were just the opposite, needed steam from the steam generator in the diesel (originally from a steam engine) for heat (and hot water in intercity cars), had a generator run off the wheels when the train was moving and an under-floor battery for when the train was not moving for lights. Today all passenger diesels locomotives have a second much smaller diesel engine to generate power for the cars and thus have "head-end power".
