Description:  January 1977 was a bad winter in the Northeast. I was trying to get to Chicago and when this picture was taken the train was maybe 20 hours late, i.e., should have been in Chicago hours ago. The the three Amtrack SDP40Fs up front are dead except for their steam generators and the train is being pushed by three Penn Central freight units. The delays were caused by freight train derailments and thus long detours and engine failure.

Description:  Empty approaching the mine. Yes that face needs cleaning. The 78-mile Black Mesa and Lake Powell RR is isolated from other railroads in northeastern Arizona. It's sole purpose is to haul coal from Black Mesa Mine near Kayenta, AZ to the Navajo Generating Station power plant at Page, AZ (Lake Powell). It is powered by a 50,000 Volt catenary. It has one train set that is in almost constant use.
