CB&Q 7300s Generator Cars Take Sunday Off
Title:  CB&Q 7300s Generator Cars Take Sunday Off
Description:  Because the Gallery Cars (Double Deckers) needed electricity instead of steam and the Q's E-units had no head-end-power, generators were added to these heavy weights (note roof vents and door near end of each car to insert and extract the diesel engine).

CB&Q 9973 w/Dinky in 1965
Title:  CB&Q 9973 w/Dinky in 1965
Description:  Today, most or all diesel-powered commuter rail operations do not change the length (number of cars) of trains during off-hours thus accumulating many extra miles on the cars and using many gallons of extra diesel fuel. It seems to be a trade-off between today's labor costs vs. fuel and equipment costs. In this picture of Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy E8A 9973 leading a commuter run on Sunday July 5, 1964, and the "Q" obviously didn't expect many riders and cut the train to one push-pull gallery car. The trade-off was different.

CB&Q 165ABC in 1965
Title:  CB&Q 165ABC in 1965
Description:  Early F units usually came in set of 4, i.e., ABBA. The CB&Q found that for most trains on its mostly flat railroad ABA sets were sufficient so the ABBAs were broken into ABs with another newer A added. On the CB&Q an ABBA set was lettered ABCD and an ABA set was lettered ABC. In this picture we see CB&Q 165A, an F7A and 165B and C, F3B and A. Is this the A end or the C end?
