MILW 79A and Sisters in 1966 |
Description: |
When you are short on cash you simplify your paint scheme on repaints as seen on Milwaukee Road's F7A #79A without the maroon stripe her sisters have. This April 12, 1966 shot was taken at Sturtevant, WI, 23 miles south of Milwaukee. |

CRI&P 111 on West Leads to St. Paul Union Station |
Description: |
The head house is still standing in very good shape with restaurants in it. The waiting room over the tracks was closed off a few years ago when I visited the station. The Mississippi River is just to the right of the photo and the two right tracks are all that remain. Amtrak's Empire Builder uses them but does not stop. Most of the land here, under the station, and the yards beyond is now used for parking. CB&Q 165ABC in 1964 |
Description: |
Early F units usually came in set of 4, i.e., ABBA. The CB&Q found that for most trains on its mostly flat railroad ABA sets were sufficient so the ABBAs were broken into ABs with another newer A added. On the CB&Q an ABBA set was lettered ABCD and an ABA set was lettered ABC. In this picture we see CB&Q 165A, an F7A and 165B and C, F3Bs. The train is the early morning "Pick Up" at Milledgeville, IL (122 miles from Chicago on the Twin Cities Line). If the train had a number, it was never used on the dispatcher's line. Yes it is a heck of a train to be doing local switching, but it did weekdays. |

I wrote this caption: "This lash up is a ABBBB set of F7s shown at the Grand Canyon Station with the seasonal train called the Grand Canyon in July 1962. This train made a nocturnal round trip (69 mi.one-way) to the mainline at Williams Jct. (home of the current Grand Canyon Ry, note the mainline has moved north about 1/2 mile) to make connections and exchanging through cars." Then Art Burton corrected it: "The photo of the Santa Fe train you posted in the Grand Canyon was not the seasonal train. This photo must be a special tour train. My dad was a Pullman Porter on the Grand Canyon Limited sleeper that went into the Canyon. I was actually with him at the age of 12 in July of 1962 on a trip. The usual train at that time was a train consisting of a GP diesel with the Pullman cars, one eastbound and one westbound, one or two chair cars and a baggage car. This train was put together at Williams Junction. To see a long train with as many passenger road engines in the consist, lets you know that was a special tour train." |
