Three E7As Blow Their Soot Leaving Chicago Union Station with the CZ |
Description: |
After idling in Union Station, the first time the engineer notched up all the built-up soot in the cylinders was blown out as these three elephant-style ladies demonstrated. Photo taken from Roosevelt Road Bridge. The tallest building to the right is the Board of Trade, which today would be obscured by the new and larger Board of Trade Building. The whitish building to the left is the Post Office in the air space above the Stations south tracks. It has a hole through it for Architect Daniel Burnhams Congress Boulevard (Eisenhower, nee Congress, Expressway). |

Description: |
Note the extra air hoses and the jumper cable door open. This train is about to become an intermodal train with multiple freight engines upfront and 50 or more piggybacks and other freignt cars behind. Southern decided not to join Amtrak and ran intermodal trains (except for the Southern Cresant) that made station stops. See http://railfan44.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=738818 |

Two Sun Bleached Noses After Years of Facing West |
Description: |
Taken three miles west of State Street at Western Avenue Interlocking where the Milwaukee Road tracks from Union Station turn to the north and in the process cross the CNW tracks from its downtown station. Note the double-slip switches and the different signal heads for each road. #49 had an outbound train while #54 was inbound and had just left the interlocking plant. The tall white building in the background was the Standard Oil Building (Big Stan) a couple blocks east of State Street. Big Stan is now called the Aon Center but remains the third tallest building in the United States. |

Come On Guys, Let's Go! Englewood Union Station |
Description: |
An AB6 had an E6B carbody modified with a single 1000 h.p. engine, windows and controls at one end, baggage compartment, and steam generator. Only two were built by EMD in June 1940 for the Rock Island (#s 750 and 751) for the Rocky Mountain Rocket (Google it). The train would run from Chicago to Limon, CO with an EA-unit on the front and an AB6 second. The train was split at Limon with the AB6 taking a few cars to Colorado Springs and the other unit taking the rest of the cars to Denver. The reverse happened on the trip to Chicago. See: http://www.railroademporium.com/images/stories/ri/rocky-mountain-rocket-lg.jpg. Of course over the years there were variations on this theme. A second diesel was added in the baggage compartment making each a full E-unit. The six pictures I am posting are about how the EA6s lived out there lives in commuter service in Northeastern, Illinois. What is all that piping on the roof? Enjoy! |

CB&Q 165ABC in 1965 |
Description: |
Early F units usually came in set of 4, i.e., ABBA. The CB&Q found that for most trains on its mostly flat railroad ABA sets were sufficient so the ABBAs were broken into ABs with another newer A added. On the CB&Q an ABBA set was lettered ABCD and an ABA set was lettered ABC. In this picture we see CB&Q 165A, an F7A and 165B and C, F3B and A. Is this the A end or the C end? |

CRI&P 630 in 1965 |
Description: |
Arguably the most beautiful diesel locomotives ever made were the EMD shovel nosed E5As and E6As. Here April 21, 1965's morning sun makes the 24 year old Rock Island E6A 630 looks almost new. She is crossing the PRR diamonds at Englewood Union Station on Chicago's south side with a SB commuter train. Pigs are on another RI track. |

Looking like a mixed train because of the 40 ft. combine on the rear this day instead of a way car (CB&Q jargon for caboose), this is the Oregon Turn with NW2 9234 doing the pulling. It near Rochelle, IL on September 5, 1964 while making its round trip between Oregon, IL and the Eola, IL yards on the line to the Twin Cities. All the corn stalks in the field have been cut. |
