| By: | Marty Bernard | | Dates: | 12/27/1971 - 12/27/1971 | | Album Info: | For some reason I decided on Dec. 27, 1971 to photograph each of the passenger cars on Amtrak's Train 81, The Silver Star, at Broad Street Station, Richmond, VA.
All trains ran west to east through Broad Street Station during the time I was familiar with it between 1968 and 1972 and it then served only SCL and RF&P trains. The SCL (ex-ACL and ex-SAL) and the RF&P tracks met west of the station and from that junction all trains (NB and SB) headed east to the station, entered the station's loop tracks, made their station stop pointing east, then looped back west to the RF&P/SCL junction.
The consist was:
2 baggage cars,
RF&P 855,
SCL West Palm Beach,
SCL Cumberland County,
SCL 5415,
SCL 5912 Dinner,
SP 2363,
UP 5475,
PC 1533, and
PC 1510.
The first three pictures are of the train arriving via the station's loop. In the first picture the rear cars of the train (behind the leafless trees) are moving east but the diesels have entered the loop and are momentarily heading south. The third shows the lead diesel heading east again into the station proper. Esentially the train made a sharp "S" curve.
In the remaining pictures the train has made its station stop and has looped back heading west toward the RF&P/SCL junction.
