Description:  The traffic on S. Royal Bougham Way was heavy because an event had just let out. The aluminum tube gate was too far back from the current tracks. The SUV stopped in a reasonable place but one gate hit it on the roof. The driver backed up and snapped off the gate. The engineer laid on the horn. As a good railfan I moved the gate to the side of the road. The wiring for the lights continued to work. I came by a few hours later and the gate was fixed. The "break away" joint allowed easy reinstallation.

Description:  Okeechobee is not one of Amtrak's important stations. It is the bus shelter above red car at the left. The SAL passenger station is gone. The freight station stands, is boarded up, but looks like there is warehousing activity in it, and has the only Okeechobee sign, probably from the SAL era. No agent, but no problem. The passengers had cell phones and were talking to Julie. She was wrong. The train was ten minutes later than she said it would be and didnt change her story even when I called her a couple of minutes after her ETA. Most of the black dots on #15's nose are dead bugs. It's black bug mating season. Only the Star calls here.

Description:  This is the Palmetto, which originates at 8:00 am in Savannah. The person in the green shirt talking to the engineer is Phillip Shaw, a RR Picture Archives contributor, who is heading north. The car attendent of the first car is walking up, and the other person is unknown but just took a picture of the train. The conductor, who just asked for a brake test, is in the white shirt at the far end of the train. The train is in the north pocket of the station. The tiny black spots on the nose of #11 are deadbugs no doubt accumulated on Saturday's southbound trip. The mainline tracks are to the right of #11's snowplow on the embankment which reduces the chance of them being flooded.

Description:  This is the Norfolk Southern's (ex-SOU) 5-mile long trestle off of which Katrina washed the tracks. NS fished them out of the Lake and was running again in a few days. There is a lift bridge near the north end of the trestle just out of the picture behind the train. Map at: http://railfan44.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=992957 #20 is on-time about 35 miles from NOUPT. Note the Heritage Fleet Diner mid-train. I hope it looks better on the inside.
