A Yellow GM E-unit and a Red Ford Mustang Editors Pick! Contributor's Pick!
This was train #111 westbound on the Milwaukee Road at Lanark, IL, 18 miles short of the Mississippi River on August 5, 1964. At Omaha, Neb., it would enter UP tracks. It was the combined City of Denver and City of Portland. At Omaha the City of Portland cars would be cut off and continue to Portland. Note the order boards in front of the station. Both high order boards were up meaning the agent had no orders for #111 or the next eastbound train. The agent was on the platform to inspect the train, as he should have been, and was waving to the fireman. Most probably that was his red Mustang next to the station.

Tony Fernandez General Great shot! I'm going to hazard a guess and state that this is an E9A from UP's 1961 order (#908-909) or the 1962 order (#909-910), judging by the shape of the coupler cutout in the pilot, and since it has a headlight in the upper casing. All of UP's E8A units had their headlights in a door-mounted casing, with a warning light mounted in the upper casing. Only UP's 1956 order of E9s had their headlights mounted in the lower (door) position. 2/4/2008 10:49:14 AM

Kipp Meyers General That is my uncle Barry Meyers who often worked as an operator at Lanark (my grandfather M.E. "Riley" Meyers was agent. The 1964 1/2 Mustang was Barry's. He said it was brand new when this photo was taken. Would live to be able to use this shot in the Lanark Sesquicentenial book. 10/26/2011 5:09:29 PM
