Tim Huemmer General All kinds of cool details in this shot. I like the Southern Containerized frieght container back there in the PRR Freight house trackage. 3/29/2007 2:46:51 PM
Gregg Bartley General I'm not at all certain I understand how those switches operate. 4/18/2007 2:51:44 PM
Marty Bernard General Those are double-slip switches. A train can come at it from any direction and either continue straight or take one diverging route. Go to a really good RR hobby shop and they may have one in HO that you can play with and puzzle on. Oh yes, they are also called puzzle switches. Obviously they can do many types of train moves in a compact space, thus their value. As you would expect they require continuous maintenance. The lack of snow/ice on them means they are being kept warm by natural gas heaters. 4/18/2007 5:59:10 PM
Marty Bernard General One further comment. These have movable frogs because a derailment here is a disaster because of the number of trains (passengers) that would be delayed. If the switch is set wrong for the next move the interlocking plant will move two sets of points and all four frogs. The tower operator would have to pull out or push in one lever (handle) and then pull the appropriate signal lever. 4/19/2007 12:04:39 AM
Chris Lubinski General Nice photo! That Pennsy freight house is a memory to all who knew Chicago! 8/14/2013 8:58:09 AM
